Beta Spaces 2010, Boxed In and Out

Boxed In and Out

“Boxed In and Out” featured a wide range of artists displaying their works in small hand painted black boxes. These boxes were originally used to house and transport three small tubes of oil paint, saved from the trash bin they are now primed with a matte black vinyl paint and will serve to frame the diverse works of artists from Bushwick and beyond. The small, intimate space that these artists have been given to work with shares a mirrored sense in the simple artists’ loft venue in which they will be displayed.

Home Sweet? questions the romantic idea of the home by digging through the surface to reveal what lies beneath. This exhibition examines the concept of “Home” in several ways: Home as the hidden relationship one has with their personal space, Home as body with flesh and organs, Home as a psychological space, and the symbolisms of the body as architecture.

BETA Spaces:Update

BETA Spaces (Bushwick Exhibition Triangle of Alternative Spaces) is a free one-day festival of conceptualized and thematic group exhibitions. The Festival takes place on November 14,2010. BETA Spaces is confined to a 15-block area bordered by Bushwick Ave, Johnson Ave, and Starr St. Home Sweet? will be exhibited at Better than Jam(1087 Flushing Ave), a retail store that sales handmade clothes and accessories.  Depending on the amount of work and size, some of the work will exhibited in the store and some of the work will be exhibited in the common area of 1087 Flushing Ave. The owner of the store, Karin, is allowing me to have the work up for a week. The work in the store will be up for a week while any work in the common area will be up for the duration of the festival, due to safety concerns. Better than Jam shares the common area other businesses such as Knitting cafĂ©, and a Gourmet Deli. I like to think of it as a mini mall, there will be traffic going through this area.

On October 6, I will be submitting artist’s names to BETA Spaces to complete my registration.  I will still be accepting submissions and finalizing the details until October 17th 2010.
